Let’s give Gina a big Cottage Market Welcome! I am so happy to have her over today to guest post for us. As you all know…I am not a “sewer”. So we thought it would be fun for all of you to experience a quick and easy sewing project. Oh the magic you can create with your favorite fabrics! Enjoy and I will see you later for Take 5!
Hi Cottage Market readers! I’m Gina from The Shabby Creek Cottage – where I blog about making your home beautiful, no matter what type of home you have on whatever budget you have. I’m so excited to be here at my sweet friend Andrea’s blog today!
So Andrea is one of my real life besties – and she’s always telling me how she can’t sew. I was determined that today I’d share a project that even she could do – a super simple king size pillow cover. You can make them with one yard of fabric (each) and in about 20 minutes. So let’s get to it!
This project takes very few supplies & tools. For king size pillow cover, you’ll need:
One yard of fabric (54 inches wide works best)
Scissors
A yard stick
Marking chalk or pen
Straight Pins
Iron
Sewing Machine
First, start by cutting your fabric, across the width, from side to side. Most home decor fabric is 54 inches wide, and that’s what I’ve used for this project.
On each end, you’ll have a selvage edge. Turn in the edge, and iron it down.
Now turn in one fold, and iron again.
Run a straight stitch across the edges you just ironed down.
Now fold your fabric in half (right sides together), and measure ten inches from the fold towards the hems. Mark on both sides of the fabric, ten inches from the middle in either direction. Once marked, you’ll have 20 inches right in the middle of the fabric.
Connect the tiny marks on each end of the fabric, so you have a line on each end of the 20 inch middle, then fold in the hemmed ends, layering one on top of the other. You’re creating a pocket opening to insert the pillow form from the back.
Once it’s all folded, pin together the ends, so it will stay together while sewing.
Now run a stitch from end to end, all across the pin line.
After both sides are sewn, turn out the pillow cover and iron it all well. Pay close attention to the edges and corners, so everything is straight and neat.
Now run a 1/4 inch stitch all the way around the outside of the pillow cover. Need help for guidance to keep your hem straight? Put a piece of masking or painter’s tape on your machine to be your guide.
Once you’re finished sewing, insert your pillow and you’re done! It’s so easy, even a self-proclaimed non-sewer can do it!
