This blog has gone to the dogs today!!! We started the day off with a great post on PetBox where we get to help rescue animals and you get to enter into a great giveaway for your furry friend! Now we have a fresh new recipe created in the kitchen of Pops and Basil…Cran-Pumpkin Peanut butter Oatmeal Homemade Dog Treats. WOW that’s a mouth full and it is a mouthful of flavor your doggie is going to LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
Have I ever told you that my Pops and Basil are the fussiest little dogs in the entire world? Well they are! So baking for them is let’s say a bit of a challenge. If they don’t like what I bake I don’t take it personally any more because my band of doggy friends always seem to go head over tail for them…but this time…we have a WINNER…really! They both loved them…I was in shock…both of them!!! We put Basil in front of the treats to take a picture of him and he started eating them right away…we were like WHAT???? Then Pops joined in…just letting you know because if you happen to have little fuss budgets like us…this just might be the treat for your furry little family member.
Pops is once again guarding : ) How adorable is that little white frosting he is sporting! How I love a senior pup!
Basil decided that those treats needed to be eaten NOW! Basil is Pop’s son…but they are only 1 year apart…Basil is 11 years young!
So while Basil chewed away like crazy…Pops stole the other cookie and headed to a different spot!
These Homemade Dog Treats are EASY…oh so EASY to make! Don’t they look so pretty in little heart shapes with a crimson cranberry topping!
If you have a larger doggy…break out the bigger cookie cutters
No matter what the shape…your doggies are going to love them! I thought hearts were perfect…Valentine’s Day is on the way and it is National Heart Month!
So…Pops and Basil say we should share the recipe so all of their friends can have something yummy too…be prepared for an easy little baking project!
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups of Oatmeal flour (simply place 1 1/2 cups of regular oatmeal in the food processor and grind till fine : )
1/2 – 1 cup of dried cranberries
1 cup of pure packed pumpkin…NOT pumpkin pie in a can…pure pumpkin
2 large eggs
1/2 cup peanut butter of your choice…smooth…chunky…natural…
1/2 – 1 cup of dried cranberries…check out the wonderful health benefits from cranberries…there are many! DO NOT USE RAISINS instead…they are on the DOG POISON LIST!!!
1 tablespoon of organic brown sugar (optional) it just adds a little touch of sweetness and distributed over 100 small treats…it does not present a problem : ) but it can be left out.
Directions:Â
Use a standing mixer…crack your two eggs into the mixing bowl and beat for about 1 minute…then add the packed pumpkin…mix for a minute and then add your peanut butter and beat till everything is nice and creamy. Now slowly add your flours and the dried cranberries until you get a nice thick…not too sticky…not too dry dough…one that is perfect for rolling. If the dough is a bit sticky…just add a touch more flour and if it is too dry…a little bit more peanut butter or a little bit of milk. Flour your work area and take the dough out of the bowl and put it on the floured surface…cut in half…and roll the dough to approximately 1/4″ thickness and then cut away with your favorite cookie cutter! Gather the scraps and roll them out and start cutting out shapes till all the dough is used. Line 2 cookie trays with parchment paper and load them up with the treats. You can place close together since they do not rise. Bake in a 350 oven for 30 minutes…depending on your oven a few minutes more or less. We made them crunchy and it took exactly 33 minutes. Let cool and then let the pups at them…you will be getting tons of kisses with this homemade batch of doggy baked goodness! They will last in a well sealed container for about 10 days. If you know you are not going to use them…pack them up in freezer bags and place them in the freezer and just take them out as needed…they will last for 6 months in the freezer : )
Oh…here’s a fun little project that you can do if you want to make a little doggie cookie jar for you or a family member or friend! Just find yourself a plastic little doggie (I was lucky enough to find a dachshund) and a Mason Jar …paint it your doggie your favorite color…let it dry…coat it with a thin white glue and dip the whole thing into glitter. Let it dry and then blow dry the excess glitter off. Now get your favorite color spray paint or acrylic brush on paint and paint the lid of a mason jar…it will probably need two coats…then attach the little sparkling doggie to the flat top with a strong glue…fill up the jar…screw on the fancy doggie top and add a bow…a tag…or anything you would like…it makes such a cute little accessory and it is just soooooooooooooooooooo easy!
It’s just that easy!
So…ready to bake up these yummy homemade dog treats for your favorite pups!!! There are going to be some tails waggin for sure!
Oh yes…Pops doesn’t want you to miss out on his name sake treat which is fabulous…Pops Pizza Dog Treats.
Then drop by this mornings post and enter in the PetBox GIVEAWAY and give rescue a helping PAW
Sending tons of Pops and Basil Hugs and Kisses!!!

Hi I’m gonna try these but without the cranberries , because cranberries are bad for dogs the have the same effect as grapes and raisins, these are both toxic to dogs and so are cranberries.
Andrea says
Hi there Barbara…how are you today! Hope all is well with you and
yours. I just wanted to send you a little note because I saw the comment
about the cranberries. I also want you to know that I am very
conscientious about the ingredients used because I am truly a huge animal
lover and also a rescuer…I would never ever want to do harm to anyone at
all. The amount of cranberries that are in this recipe will not cause any
problems for a dog : ) Here is the information that I wanted to share 🙂
This is the list from the ASPCA of all Toxic Foods to Dogs:

This is the list from the ASPCA of all Toxic Plants:

This is the list of Household Cleaners that are Toxic:

They are also not recommended to treat a urinary infection as their
chemistry is different than our and a VET is the only way to really treat
it correctly : )

There’s no data at this time indicating that *cranberries* (Vaccinium spp.)
are *toxic to dogs*—or any other animal species. However, the berries can
cause gastrointestinal upset, which can result from the ingestion of any
plant material.
Then there is this general statement:
*Cranberries* are safe for your *dog* as a treat. However, don’t feed your
*dog* large quantities every day because they may cause bladder stones.
Also, don’t treat a Urinary Tract Infection with *cranberries*, take it to
the vet.Mar 10, 2015

Hate to sound goofy but what does it mean ‘packed pumpkin’? Is it pumpkin that has been pureed or chopped in small pieces?
Andrea says
Hi there, there is a can called Packed Pumpkin which comes in 15 ounce can. It is pure pumpkin puree with no spices added, Libby’s makes it and it is a great brand! I hope that helps! — take care
Jess says
This looks really amazing, but how do I get the cranberries to stick in the cookie? Do I bake with the cranberries in it?
Andrea says
You fold the cranberries into the batter just like you do with chocolate chips and bake! Then when they come out of the oven you can garnish them with a cranberry on top! If you have any more questions please let me know! — take care!

We have the first batch cooling now. If Chyanne’s nose twitching is any indication, this is going to be a big hit! No canned pumpkin available in Scotland that doesn’t cost the earth, so being the good mama I am to my spoiled little girl, I cooked the pumpkin myself. The smell so good. Hubs says he’s so used to Chyanne asking for something he’s eating, he might steal one of her cookies! Naughty hubs! Thanks so much for such a great recipe!!
Leilani says
About how much treats do you think this batch makes? Planning to make this as a Thanksgiving treat!
Andrea says
Hi there Leilani…how are you : ) Well of course it will depend on the size cookie cutter you use. The one that I used would be considered a little smaller than average…and I got 48 out of that batch…I sure hope that helps and I hope the furbabies that will be getting these treats ENJOY!!! Hugs to you and yours pups! Have an amazing day!

Just a quick note,2nd time making these–the 1st. time I “forgot” to mention to my son tghat they were dog cookies. I was watching hin try and snitch one. Her took one and popped it into his mouth–I waited until it was chewed and swallowed and then blurted it out. Nothing not human grade in there–just not sweet cookies like we are used to. Thanks–My 2 dogs love them
Andrea says
Awwwwww…thank you so much for the morning smile! I am so glad that your 2 doggies (what are their names?) love the cookies. No…they are not sweet enough for us humans but the pups love them and I think that little POP of cranberry gives them a little sweet treat that is just enough : ) I have to tell you that my husband actually eats the Pops Pizza Treats when they come out of the oven LOL!!!! You have made my days and please give your pups tons of hugs from me and mine! There will be many new pup treat recipes in the New Year so stay tuned : ) HUGS and here’s wishing you and yours the most wonderful New Year EVER!!!
Kathy says
I found this recipe because I was looking for a dog treat with cranberries to help prevent my border collie from getting another urinary tract infection ( and because I want to give her healthy treats). Do you think this will be helpful? Also, she has food allergies and so I avoid dog food with grains, particularly wheat. Do you recommend a substitute, such as coconut or almond flour? Thanks in advance!
Andrea says
Hi there Kathy…I sent you an email…sure hope it helps! : ) You take care now…sending tons of hugs and wishes for a wonderful day.
Shari Stoddard says
Your pups are ADORABLE! Doxie fan from WAY back, especially the seniors!
Didi says
I made these and my dog loved them. I laughed at that other comment by someone about her son because when I made these I had to tell my 7 year old they weren’t for him! They do look delicious for humans too!
Andrea says
You made me SMILE!!! Whenever I make my Pops Pizza Popper Dog Treats…my husband is the first to eat one lol …then my daughter : ) The good thing is is that they are ALL SAFE for humans in case someone makes a mistake : ) I am THRILLED that your Dog LOVES THEM..YAY!!!! I will be creating some new treats really soon…so stay tuned. (Be sure to make the Strawberry Smoothie Frozen Dog Treats…your dog will LOVE them and so will your son…really they are YUMMY! I pop one whenever I make them! You take care now and have an amazing weekend! Hugs…stay cool!
