I have been known to have a very black thumb. Not too happy about it but have come to face the fact that if I purchase a plant that it could be considered premeditated murder!  I know that succulents are really easy to grow…but even those have bit the dust in my care…I do think that I kill them with what I think is kindness! I really wanted to have a few succulent plants around…maybe a cluster of them…so I had to do what any lover of all living things would do…GO FAUX!!! That is how this Quick and Easy Mini Succulent Planter DIY Project was born!
They are going to have a home in my studio after it gets a major make-over! These are so easy you won’t believe it! You start with a two by four and a two by two made from pine. You need it to be pine since it is soft enough to drill a nice size hole with ease. Cut it the size that you would like it to be. Then take your power drill…add a 1 1/2″ circle bit into it and drill where you want to plant your succulent! It is that simple! Then you sand your piece of wood nice and smooth and they your own creative fun begins!
I chose to paint them in a combo of white…metallic gold and turquoise. All done with acrylic paint and simple designs. I love the ones that have the donut holes…I placed reinforcement circles where I wanted them and painted over the entire piece. Allowed it to dry completely and then peeled the stickers off…works like a charm but be sure that your piece is TOTALLY dry!!! If you want a two color piece…just paint the first coat the color you want the design to be…allow it to dry…then place your little stickers where you would like them to be and then paint over the entire piece with the next color…allow to dry completely and then peel!
I love polka dots…so that is an idea for you when you make yours! (I used a skewer…dabbed it in paint and created the polka dots.
Simple stripes work nicely also…a little bit of taping off and voila…a nice simple modern look that you can create in ANY color pallet you so desire1
Then the major fun part comes…planting your succulents! It couldn’t be easier…I got a variety pack of moss which gave me a little bit of everything and a selection of faux succulents. You can pick these things up at your local craft shop. I simply glued the moss of choice into the perimeters of the hole and on the outside top of the planter. Then hot glued the focal succulent into the center…held it there for a minute to make sure it took hold and then proceeded to add additional moss and little tiny succulents in a natural way! That’s it!  It is that simple! You can literally do a dozen of these in 2 hours…from start to finish. Wouldn’t they make great gifts! Perfect for teachers…friends…family…and so much more! Package them pretty and I am sure that they would be a hit! You can put your own spin on these…they are a blank canvas! Sure hope you give it a try.
Let me tell you an even EASIER way of making these! I found out that if you use a succulent like the one above that has a basically flat and wider bottom…you can do it without drilling the center hole…yep…just add your moss…glue the succulent in securely and decorate! That does not work when you use the taller ones…but I wanted to try so I could tell you an even easier way! So if you love this style…your work just got even easier!
They are great solo or in a grouping. The possibilities are ENDLESS!!!
I sure hope you enjoyed this quick and easy little tutorial. You can make these to fit any home decor style. Colors…patterns…maybe wall paper them…so many choices!!!! The cool thing is they will always look like they have been perfectly watered : ) Sure hope you enjoy and create!
