What do you do when you know what you want but you just don’t know how to go about it? Well that is the way we felt when my son took over the apartment upstairs and decided he would like to have a wooden feature wall. Some of the ideas we had where, barn wood (not very plentiful in the suburbs of New Jersey), paneling…not really…an eclectic combination of scrap wood…not as finished as he would like. So when we found Cedar Safe Closet Liners (they are available at Home Depot) our decision was made. They had the look he was going for…they were budget friendly…they would cover some of the imperfections in the wall and they certainly looked easy to install. So join us for a DIY Cedar Plank Feature Wall and a little Makeover!
The cedar planking was just the trick…great for converting any space into one that is a bit more masculine. Perfect for all the sons out there!
The only thing that we were hesitant about was the cedar smell but let me tell you…it is not a problem. Within 4-5 days being out in the open room the cedar smell lessened to a point that you could not detect it. Of course when used in a closet with the door closed the cedar aroma prevails perfectly. Installing the planks was actually easier than expected. That was a bonus! It took approximately 4 hours to install the wall, yes…you can have this done in one day on the weekend! Let me tell you how we did it. To start your installation of the cedar planks you have to measure your wall and then locate your studs with a stud finder and mark accordingly. We started on the left side and put down the first row leveling it the best we could…then second row from the right…third from the left and so on. Cutting the cedar planks with a circular saw as we fit the wall puzzle. As you can see on the picture below…all of the planks are tongue and groove to make the process even easier.
Each cedar plank was nailed into the studs with a brad nailer. They went through with ease.
On either side of the cedar plank wall we used 1 inch white molding trim. It was truly that easy.
Now that this beautiful wall was up and a perfect back drop …it was begging to be dressed up a bit. So it was time for Peter to shop his stuff and that he did. It is something everyone can do to make a project very budget friendly. Sometimes it is amazing how things come together with items that you have. The shelf was a very inexpensive piece to make (tutorial soon) …
the total cost was $11.00!
Then some prints of the Cammarata Dogs…Rusty, Beau, Sherlock, Mr. Jiggs, Poppa and Basil placed in painted IKEA frames on either sides of the shelf was the perfect touch for over the bed. By the way…6 frames from IKEA $4 and the prints $3! Cost effective…I think so.
Peter loved the look of the wall so much he didn’t want to cover it up with large end tables…so he came up with the idea of shelving end tables which consist of shelving wood…paint…sheet metal…nails and brackets (tutorial coming soon) so easy to do and works perfectly as industrial style end tables.
By the way…the cost for the 2 end tables $39…once again extremely cost effective…
and they still truly fit in with the look of the wall and room.

A bit embarrassing…but this is the way the wall looked before…
Big difference don’t you think? So of course the other walls were feeling left out so they were painted a great shade of turquoise that complements the cedar plank wall perfectly. Again…we shopped our home and a shelving unit that my father made many years ago was used again and it worked perfectly as the focal point of this wall (my Dad was smiling from heaven I am sure).
It was a great place for some of his favorite books …
and a great place to combine the love of comics (an office basket is a great way to have your reading material instantly)…
…baseball…pop culture and let’s not forget his major …American History!
So if you are looking for a little makeover…something with a more masculine look we highly suggest starting with cedar planks…they are breeze to install…look great and so cost effective.
So far…he is loving the space!
Stay tuned for makeover part 2 and the tutorials for the shelf and the end tables.
