Aluminum foil has been a dead useful kitchen tool since 1910. It’s ability to flex, fold, conduct heat, and contain messes has made it a staple in most homes. Its usefulness extends far beyond the kitchen though. Check out everything you can do with it!
Unconventional Foil Hacks in the Kitchen:
- Fold a long strip of foil over itself a few times for strength. Put it into your pressure cooker under the pot. Now you have an easy way to lift the pot out without getting burned!
- Line the bottom of your oven and stove’s drip pans for easy cleanup!
- Fold a small strip of foil over the edge or a plastic bag. Run an iron over it and it will seal the bag shut! No more stale food!
- Roll a length of foil into a funnel when you need to transfer liquids with minimal spills.
- Fold over a length of foil to make it stronger. Shape it into any custom design and you have your very own cookie cutter or cake pan depending on the size.
- Wrap any bar soap in foil to keep it from wearing down just sitting next to the sink getting wet. The foil will keep the soap from sitting in water. This is also great for the shower!
- Kitchen scissors and shears see a lot of use. Keep them sharp by repeatedly cutting a sheet of foil.
Foil Hacks for Food:
- Wrap foil around the stem ends of bananas to keep them fresher, longer.
- Wrap foil around the edge or your pie or cake to keep the edges from getting overdone while waiting for the center to cook.
- Create an envelope out of foil to cook with no clean up!
- Hate soggy pizza? You can reheat any crispy food in a pan on the stove with foil covering the whole top of the pan tightly, sealing in the heat.
- Celery can stay fresh in the fridge up to 4 weeks wrapped in aluminum foil!
Foil Hacks Around the House:
- Line a tray or tub with foil. Add baking soda, salt, and boiling water. Let your sterling silverware or jewelry sit in it to remove any tarnish! You can also use vinegar instead of water for a similar effect.

- Aluminum foil is great for cleaning! Scrape you metal (NOT non-stick) pans free of stuck-on gunk. You can also rub down your grill to clear off any char!
- Easily line cabinets and drawers with foil instead of contact paper. Flip it when it’s dirty and replace it when both sides are used!
- Aluminum foil will also remove rust from irons, chrome and more. Ball up some foil, dip it in some water, and scrub away.
- If you want No-Mess Painting…just wrap those doorknobs tightly with aluminum foil and for it as perfectly as you can and then you are free to paint without experiencing a major clean-up solution.
- Place squares of foil under the legs or corners of furniture to help move it easily over carpet.
- Clean your cast iron pan with a crumpled ball of foil!
Foil Hacks for Clothes:
- Place a crumpled ball of foil in your dryer to help eliminate static and soften clothes!
- Line your ironing board with foil. When you iron your clothes the foil will reflect the heat, effectively iron the back side at the same time!
First Aid Foil Hack:
- Heal burns! If you get a burn, it should first be placed under cool running water to reduce the heat. Dry it then add ointment and bandage if needed. Wrap the area in foil. The foil will transfer any remaining the heat away from a clean and treated burn to heal it faster.
Garden Foil Hacks:
- Make a light box for seedlings. Cut off the top and a single side of the box. Line the rest of the inside with foil. Place in a sunny spot with your seedling sitting in it. They now get even sunlight from all directions.
- Cut and hang strips of foil in your trees that you want to keep bird free.
- Mixing small pieces of foil into Mulch will help repel insects from plants.
- Foil can also be used in place of plastic to wrap around the bases of plants to keep them safe during the winter.
Foil Hacks for Tech:
- Like the seedling box, you can line a box with foil for reflective surfaces in photography. Line a flat piece to create your very own light reflector to bounce light around.
- Curve a rectangle of cardboard and cover it in foil. Place it behind your wifi router to help bounce and amplify the signal where you want.
- You can use AAA batteries in place of AA batteries by adding a piece of foil between the contact point and the positive end of the battery.
