When it comes to New Year’s Resolutions, there are so many that focus on getting organized, losing weight, focusing on family, or getting ahead in career. It all comes back to one thing, starting your day off right! Why not make your New Year’s resolution to change up your morning routine in 2019? Here are some easy and achievable ways to make that happen.
Step One: Pick out your outfit the night before.
Nothing can slow down your day like standing in front of the closet or rifling through dresser drawers. Working from home? Hang up a cute, productive outfit that will allow you to run errands as needed. Staying at home with the kids? Break out the Converse, and make sure your comfortable. Working outside the home? Dress in layers (with a classic cardigan) to account for varying temperatures inside your workplace and maximizing your wardrobe potential. Dress your best in cute, comfy clothes even if you’re at home to start your day off right. Look good and feel good!
Step Two: Get an alarm clock.
If you’re anything like me, you use your smartphone to wake you up every morning. Although using your phone to get you out of bed with special songs, rings, or daily news can be an easy, pre-programmed way to get out of bed, it can also lead to immediate screen time. By using an old school digital alarm clock out of arm’s reach, you’ll need to get out of bed to turn it off. Put the alarm clock across the room, and you’ll be less likely to hit snooze and more likely to start your day as planned. Want to guarantee you’ll get out of bed? Try an alarm clock that rolls around and makes you chase it to turn it off.
Step Three: Eat the most important meal of the day.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” is not just an old adage told to children to get them to eat their Wheaties. A well-balanced breakfast is the way to get your body moving and make it until the afternoon. The USDA recommends to make half your plate fruits and veggies (focusing on whole fruits) and half your grains whole grains. Vary your protein routine. Great vegan options for protein include peanut butter, various nuts or legumes, and quinoa. If you meal prep or have a little time in the morning to cook, these vegetarian breakfast recipes definitely start your morning right. However, you do not have to have a formal, sit down breakfast to eat healthy in the morning. Try these grab and go vegetarian breakfasts.
Step Four: Reflect on your goals.
Every morning, ask yourself, “what will I accomplish today?” Rather than asking yourself what you hope to accomplish, talk in the affirmative. State your goals as facts. Start with “I will” and focus on the things you must accomplish and the things you want to get done. Write down these goals and read them aloud. Use a planner or journal to track your goals. If you’re a mom, it can be tough to get yourself ready and the kids moving at the same time. Follow the same steps for your kids to make things easier. For younger kids, put out their clothes the night before. For more independent children, have them choose their outfits for the next day. Don’t sweat it if the outfit isn’t what you would have picked. As long as they are safe and dressed for the weather, let it go! Set individual alarms for your kids, so even younger kids can transition to getting up on their own. Meal prepping breakfast will also save a lot of time or choose easy to serve items. Breakfast can be quick and to-go, remember! The most important thing to remember when getting the kids ready is to try to stick to a routine that works for you.
2019 can start off productive and strong even on those early mornings where it’s hard to get up and moving. You can change up your morning routine in 2019 and make it the best year yet! No matter what your goals are each day, sticking to a morning routine will help you reach them.
