Busy, busy, busy! Between obligations with work, home, and your personal life, stress can come creeping in. Self care isn’t just a buzz phrase; it’s an imperative part of your everyday life to keep your mental health in check. Please take a little time for yourself. I am someone that never did and I am trying why not join me. I do believe that it will make a difference. Use these relaxation hacks to destress and unwind.
Words of Affirmation or Prayer
If you subscribe to a higher power, prayer can be a great way to destress and focus on what you need to feel happy and fulfilled. The Serenity Prayer is a popular request that asks God to grant serenity to accept things that cannot be changed. Religion is not a necessary requirement to speak words of affirmation. Lin Manuel Miranda, of Hamilton fame and his friend Johnny Sun wrote a book of morning and evening affirmations called Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me & You to inspire readers to start and end their days on the right note. Give yourself a little pep talk every day. You are doing a great job. You are amazing, and you matter!
Water Consumption
Believe it or not, caffeine (coffee, soda, energy drinks, or even tea) can increase cortisol levels, which can increase stress in some people. The common recommendation is to drink eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day, but experts recommend drinking a half an ounce to an ounce of water for each pound you weigh to help your physical and mental health. Smart water bottles glow to remind you to stay hydrated and can be tracked on phones via Bluetooth as well as fitness trackers. Our bodies are made up of water, and staying replenished and quenching our thirst helps all aspects of physical and mental health.
Adult Coloring Books
One of the most relaxing activities you can do is color! Maybe it’s been a long time since you’ve practiced “staying within the lines”, but coloring books are so much fun and really enjoyable when you are trying to unwind. Kids love it, and adults are enjoying adult coloring books more and more! Crayola Super Tip Markers come in many colors and are perfect for coloring pages. Choose a book with positive messages and beautiful designs to stay calm and relaxed.
Get a Massage
Whether you visit a professional masseuse, try a Shiatsu Massage Cushion, or invest in a Zero Gravity Massage Chair, you’ll appreciate the tension that is relieved with a well-executed massage. Many people carry stress in their neck and back, so any form of massage can be beneficial. If you have chronic neck or back pain, you may want to see your primary care physician or chiropractor.
Take a Bath
Baths are a great place to destress and unwind. Add some bath salts to relieve sore muscles and other aches and pains. Enjoy some hypoallergenic bubble bath with a calming scent.
The hustle and bustle of everyday life can be overwhelming. Stress and anxiety caused by trying to balance everything you have going on with family, work, and your personal life can make you want to give up. Don’t! You are amazing. You’re allowed to get stressed, but you are also allowed to relax and give yourself some time to practice self care. These relaxation hacks to destress and unwind will make sure that you feel more like yourself. You can do this! If these hacks are not helping alleviate your stress and anxiety, it may be time to consult a professional. Your primary care doctor or a counselor may be able to talk to you and help you get what you need. You are not alone.
