You don’t have to live on a farm to enjoy the farmhouse style at home, but the popular look does follow a more simple and practical approach when it comes to decorating. So, say goodbye to vibrant colors and sleek furniture, and say hello to neutrals, natural elements and lots of texture that evoke charm and character.
Anyone can enjoy the farmhouse style at home because of its cozy, simple and relaxing elements, which create a unique warmhearted ambiance. The uncalculated combination of old and new will make you and your guests feel like you’re being embraced in a warm hug from grandma. Read on for ten easy ways you can achieve a fresh farmhouse look in your home.
1. Paint Your Walls Neutral Colors
It’s time to paint over any bright or bold colors on your walls. Choose neutral paint colors such as creams, taupe, grays or beige shades. You can also opt for plain white if it fits the style of the room. Lighter wall colors will set the overall tone you’re trying to achieve, while also creating a calm atmosphere.
No one does Neutrals like Liz Marie… for more inspiration… check out her wonderful blog.
2. Mix Old and New Elements
Mix your old, rustic, vintage pieces with newer and fresher pieces. You don’t want everything to look as if you purchased it in a set at a furniture store. Mix and match sofas and armchairs, swap out your typical flower vase for an old flour sifter or add a distressed end table with a new lamp to go on top.
How about adding a great vintage distressed piece as an island like Rochelle from DIY Show Off did… the unexpected simply looks amazing!
Or… how about turning a vintage grater into a jewelry display that is not only useful but becomes a tiny piece of art! You can find the DIY over at the wonderful Saved By Love Creations.
3. Incorporate Wood Decor
Nothing says farmhouse like wood. Visit an antique store to find loads of spindles, washboards and other old barnwood decor. You can even make use of distressed wood since reclaimed barn board will instantly add history and character to walls, floors, shelves or furniture. If you’re crafty, build your own open shelving. Using these elements is also environmentally responsible, so more reason to incorporate them where you can.
Adding real distressed wood to your Farmhouse if simply fabulous… but for those of you that don’t have access to the real thing… don’t fear… you can turn brand new items into distressed treasures. Visit Thrifty & Chic for a simple DIY for this wonderful effect.
4. Stay Away from Bright Colors
Neutral colors typically give off a more calming feeling in a home. While there is nothing wrong with bright colors, they’re not recommended if you want to achieve a true farmhouse look. Avoid warmer colors such as orange, purple and red, unless they are more toned-down shades. If you feel set on bright colors, mix in small pops here and there.
KariAnne over at the wonderful Thistlewood Farms has mastered adding color to her neutrals to perfection. Totally loving this Contemporary Modern Farmhouse look.
Lauren over at Bless’er House adds a rich yet understated green to her neutral Kitchen space and it looks amazing.
5. Avoid Mainstream Stores
You aren’t going to find old, worn furniture at the mall or a mainstream furniture store — maybe if you’re ok with brand new faux distressed furniture — but if you’re looking for the real deal, check out local antique shops and thrift stores. You’re sure to find unique one-of-a-kind pieces with lots of personality. Auctions, estate sales, flea markets and farm sales are other options you should scout out.
Drop by Unskinny Boppy and Beth will show you how to Antique Shop like a PRO!!!
6. Use Open-Shelving
Display your favorite farmhouse pieces with open shelving. Add old vintage books in different areas of the shelves, then scatter photographs in distressed wooden frames. Mix in a few mason jars, and maybe an old milk sign.
Open Shelving is such a wonderful thing as you will see over at New Darlings as they reveal their new Kitchen. Love it. But be aware… you have to love to clean to make them work lol!!!
7. Paint Old Furniture
Paint any old furniture you have laying around, so you can revive it and put it to good use. You’ll feel surprised at what a fresh coat of paint can do to a worn-out piece of furniture. Choose a color scheme for each room and stick to furniture that matches that specific vibe. This will bring the entire room together and transform it into a farmhouse wonderland.
No matter if you want to add a painted White Wash to your fabulous find or…
a fabulous POP of distressed color, head on over to Orphans With Make Up. You will fall in love with every piece you see! It’s a must see for lovers of all things beautiful!!!
8. Add Wood Floors
Wood floors are the perfect addition to any farmhouse home. Whether you paint them or not, remove carpet where you can, and install farmhouse wood flooring for an instant rustic feel to any room.
The Hardwood floor over at Love Grows Wild gives the space such depth and warmth. Come and visit Liz for a closer look at this fabulous Kitchen!
9. Shop for Distressed Furniture
Now is the time to go shopping for distressed furniture if you don’t already have any. This could include anything from old end tables to worn doors and windows. Antique stores are a great place to shop for these items, but you can also buy new furniture that looks distressed. If you’re feeling creative, create your own distressed piece of furniture.

10. Create Dimension
Add texture and dimension to your walls like true farmhouses with shiplap, beadboard or wainscoting. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Start small and add beadboard to your bathroom walls. Planked walls are a great addition to any living room. For your dining room, try wainscoting. Don’t feel afraid to mix in metals by way of hardware, light fixtures and other details in your home.

Transform your home into a warm farmhouse with distressed furniture, reclaimed wood, neutral colors and a balanced mixture of both new and old pieces. Take it project by project, and before you know it, your home will evoke warmth and comfort, which will make it easier to kick back and relax at the end of a long day.
