Growing plants at home can be a great way to add beauty to your home. But if you don’t have a lot of windows that let in the natural light plants need, finding the right plants can be a struggle.
Thankfully, there are houseplants that can be grown in low or indirect light conditions. These plants do not require much sunlight and some even thrive in low light. There is one downside to these plants… they are not “animal” friendly and should be kept away from your furry friends. Now let’s take a peek at a few of these easy to care for plants!
Asparagus Fern
If you’re fond of indoor plants that trail from a hanging pot or basket, the Asparagus Fern is a good idea. This plant has a feathery elegant foliage that makes it stand out.
Compared to other ferns, this plant is pretty easy to care for. It does not require a humid environment. But in order to reach its full potential, give its branches enough room to spread out. You should also keep it away from direct sunlight so it does not turn yellow and cause its leaves to drop. Please note: Do not let your dog or cats around this plant.
Chinese Money Plant
One of the most recognizable plants, the Chinese Money Plant, makes a pretty good indoor plant. Its leaves have a round and flat shape. It grows up to around 12 inches tall, making it a good plant for growing inside.
You can place this plant on a windowsill during the winter. Whenever there’s sunlight, the plant will chase it. But this doesn’t mean they should be placed in direct sunlight. Otherwise, their leaves will get damaged. This plant is SAFE for dogs… but if your kitty chews on it… they might get an upset stomach.
Elephants Ear
The Elephants Ear, or the Alocasia, is widely available and has grown popular as an indoor plant. It is native to the Philippines with many different hybrids that are now available as well.
If you are planning to add this one to your collection of houseplants, make sure to keep it away from direct sunlight as its leaves can easily burn. Please note: Do not let your dog or cats around this plant.
Rattlesnake Plant
The Rattlesnake Plant is native to Brazilian jungles. The plant has an unusual leaf shape and pattern that adds a hint of the tropics to any home.
If you want your Rattlesnake Plant to grow healthy, you need to have an area that has a rich and humid environment like a bathroom. You can situate this plant in a shady area with indirect sunlight, too. Too much sun may discolor the plant’s leaves and make them turn brown and crispy. Please note: Do not let your dog or cats around this plant. The toxicity is low… but will cause gas if ingested.
Weeping Fig
The Weeping Fig is among the most diverse plants of the Ficus family. It is also one of the best plants for improving air quality in your home.
For beginners, this is a great plant option. Its leaves tend to drop in winter, which is normal for its kind. This plant loves the morning sun. But it should be placed in a different area when the sun gets too strong, particularly in the afternoons. Please note: Do not let your dog or cats around this plant.
Pothos
This is another great plant for a beginner. It does well in low light to moderate light and requires little fuss.
Make sure to let it dry out well between waterings and you’ll be fine.

Aloe Vera will add a touch of green to your space and can come in handy (hopefully not too often : ) Please note: Do not let your dog or cats around this plant.

The Rubber Plant is fabulous. It’s a hearty plant and can handle a vast range of temperatures which comes in handy in my house because during the Summer… my home becomes a deep freeze! It also helps to naturally purify the air which is always welcome.
Indirect Sunlight is its favorite thing. So placing it near a window but not directly in the sunshine will help it to thrive.
