A Chair That Belongs to Someone

Most homes seem to have at least one chair that quietly belongs to a particular person.

Maybe it is Dad’s recliner, Mom’s favorite reading chair, a cozy seat near the window or the place where someone always curls up with the dog. No one officially assigned it… but everyone knows whose chair it is.

That kind of familiarity is part of what makes a home feel safe and settled.

A Little Story From Our Cottage:

You will never guess who has the special chair in our house. It is me… and it is at the dinner table!

Everyone else switches seats, but mine remains there waiting for me. It is funny because it was also where my Mom liked to sit. From that chair, you can look out our big window and see the whole block.

When I had her friends over for tea, she would choose one of them to sit in her chair and call her the honorary mayor of the block. They loved it! You can literally see every house from there.

A Pet’s Favorite Sleeping Spot

Pets have a wonderful way of making themselves completely at home.

They find the warmest patch of sunlight, the softest blanket or the one place where they can keep an eye on everyone. Before long, that spot becomes part of the room and part of the family’s everyday rhythm.

A pet curled up comfortably says, “This is a safe place.”

A Little Story From Our Cottage:

Our Miss Georgia loves taking long naps on the living room sofa on top of her cushy quilt. Somehow, she always manages to burrow underneath it so her face is covered.

She also loves her huge, soft and comfy bed, where you will often find her sleeping on her back with her body curled up and her feet sticking straight into the air!

All my pups have always been adorable sleepers… and I am sure yours have been too!

A Refrigerator Covered With Real Life

A refrigerator covered with photographs, children’s artwork, appointment cards, grocery lists and magnets might not make it into a decorating magazine… but it tells the story of a family.

It says there are people to remember, things to do, pictures worth saving and little artists whose work deserves a place of honor.

A perfectly clear refrigerator can be beautiful, but one covered with real life can be beautiful too.

Mine is a work of art! My Grandson Roman will call and ask me, “Nonna… do you need new art for the fridge?”

My answer is always yes! He also has his own little gallery in our home.

A Basket That Wanders From Room to Room

Almost every home has a basket, tray or container that seems to travel around.

One week it holds books. The next week it collects toys, mail, blankets, craft supplies or things that need to go upstairs.

It might never have one official purpose, but it is always useful… and somehow it becomes part of the home.

Make It Feel More Like Home:

Choose one pretty basket and let it work wherever your family needs it most. A home does not have to stay frozen in one arrangement to be beautiful.

A Table With a Few Marks on It

A table that has been used for years will usually carry a few signs of life.

There may be a small scratch from a school project, a faint mark from a hot dish or a little dent that nobody remembers making. Those marks can feel frustrating when they first happen… but later, they often become part of the table’s story.

A family table does not need to remain flawless. It needs to be a place where people can gather.

We were going to buy a new kitchen table years ago, but that never happened.

Even though the kids are older now, they did not want to see that table leave its spot. There are little memory marks from hot glue gun accidents, scratches from the kids crafting, a tiny burn mark and much more.

Each mark holds a memory and reminds us of someone we love… so the table stays!

Now a new generation sits at it. Roman has already made his mark too lol!

A Drawer Filled With Useful Little Things

There is usually one drawer that holds everything people reach for constantly.

Scissors, tape, batteries, string, a screwdriver, spare keys, pencils and all those mysterious little objects that do not seem to belong anywhere else somehow find their way inside.

It may not be the prettiest drawer in the house, but it is often one of the most helpful.

Sometimes a home feels welcoming because the things people need are easy to find.

A Mug That Feels Better Than All the Others

We can own an entire cabinet filled with mugs… and still reach for the same one every morning.

Maybe it fits perfectly in your hands, came from someone special or simply makes the coffee taste a little better. It does not have to be expensive or fancy.

It is yours… and using it becomes a tiny daily ritual.

A Little Story From Our Cottage:

We are definitely a house of mugs. We have three shelves of mugs in the closet, a full mug rack and even more tucked away!

But every morning, Joe picks the Donald Duck mug.

I vary mine between the mugs the kids have given me and anything from Roman lol! I love sipping my coffee and thinking about all of them.

Coffee and tea can be very therapeutic! I have even been dabbling in making my own tea flavors. I will have to share some with you soon!

A Meal Everyone Recognizes

Every family seems to have at least one meal that feels like home.

It may be a pot of soup, pasta made a certain way, grilled cheese on a rainy day or a recipe everyone requests when they need comfort.

The meal itself does not need to be elaborate. What matters is the feeling that comes with it.

Familiar food has a wonderful way of saying, “You are home now.”

Make It Feel More Like Home:

Write down one family comfort meal and keep the ingredients nearby. It does not have to be reserved for a special occasion.

The Sound That Means Someone Is Home

Sometimes a home is defined by its sounds.

The garage door opening, keys being placed on the counter, a dog running toward the door, the kettle beginning to whistle or someone calling hello from another room can become deeply comforting.

We may barely notice these sounds while they are happening… but we certainly miss them when they are gone.

A Familiar Scent Coming From the Kitchen

A simmering pot, fresh coffee, toast, cookies or garlic warming in a pan can change the entire feeling of a home.

Scents connect themselves to memories so quickly. One familiar smell can take us back to Sunday dinners, childhood kitchens or someone we loved cooking beside us.

A house does not need to smell like a candle shop. Sometimes the best scent is simply dinner being made.

Garlic just beginning to turn golden would probably be voted our family’s favorite scent. You never know exactly what is coming… but you know it is going to be good!

A Tradition Nobody Planned

Some of the best family traditions begin completely by accident.

Maybe everyone eats a particular meal on a certain night, watches the same movie every year or gathers in the kitchen at the same time each morning.

Nobody sat down and officially declared it a tradition… it simply happened often enough to become one.

Those small, repeated moments give a family a sense of belonging.

We have a bunch of little traditions in our family, but I will share a newer one with you.

Every time I see Roman, we share tea. Usually, I bring a new flavor I created and name it after something he loves… including himself!

He enjoys those moments, but probably not quite as much as I do.

Anytime a child, no matter whether they are 5 or 105, wants to spend time with you… it is a very good thing!

A Place Where Someone Can Truly Rest

A welcoming home gives people permission to rest.

It might be a comfortable sofa with a soft blanket, a quiet corner with a lamp or a bed that feels especially peaceful at the end of the day.

A restful space does not need to be large or perfectly decorated. It simply needs to say, “You can put everything down for a little while.”

Make It Feel More Like Home:

Look at the place where you usually rest. Add one thing that would make it more comfortable, such as a pillow, a small table, softer light or a basket for books.

Check the places where the other people in your home rest too. Surprise them with a little something that will make their spot more comfortable.

It is all about the little things!

A Handwritten Recipe

A handwritten recipe carries so much more than ingredients.

It carries familiar handwriting, little stains from years of cooking and sometimes notes added in the margins.

Even when the recipe is available online, the handwritten copy can feel irreplaceable.

It connects one kitchen to another and one generation to the next.

A Little Story From Our Cottage:

We are lucky to have a few handwritten recipes from my Nonna and Grandma.

My favorite is the handwritten recipe for zeppole. When they are frying up in the kitchen, everything feels like all is good with the world.

Something Made by a Child

Children’s artwork and handmade gifts rarely match the decorating plan… and that is exactly why they matter.

A painted rock, a crooked ornament, a drawing or a tiny handmade treasure can bring more warmth to a room than something purchased from a store.

Displaying it tells a child that what they created is important and that they are part of the home’s story.

A Little Story From Our Cottage:

I have three sculptures proudly displayed in our home.

One is a lovely shade of iridescent purple and terra cotta. One is made in natural Play Doh colors and the other is a wonderful rainbow of colors.

With one glance, you can find us, our dogs, televisions, a comfy chair and so much more!

Michelangelo would never have had a chance against Peter, Heather and Roman!

An Object That Belonged to Someone You Love

An inherited object does not have to be valuable to be precious.

It might be a mixing bowl, a small piece of jewelry, an old book, a chair, a photograph or a simple kitchen tool.

Its meaning comes from the person who used it and the memories it carries.

These objects remind us that our homes are connected to the people and places that came before us.

For us, one of those special pieces is the sweet antique hutch that belonged to my Nonna.

Evidence That Someone Was Thought About

A home feels loving when we can see small signs that people are paying attention to one another.

It might be someone’s favorite snack waiting in the pantry, a blanket placed on their chair, a note left on the counter or a cup of coffee made the way they like it.

These gestures are usually small… but they say, “I know you. I remembered you. You matter here.”

Make It Feel More Like Home:

Do one quiet thing today that will make another person feel remembered.

It does not need to cost anything.

The Freedom to Be Imperfect… The Freedom to Say, “You Do You!”

Perhaps the most important thing that makes a house feel like home is the freedom to be imperfect.

The pillows do not always have to be straight. The laundry does not always have to be finished. Dinner does not always have to be homemade and every room does not have to be ready for company.

Well… there is a to do list I can cross off lol!

A real home changes from day to day because the people living inside it are changing too.

There will be busy seasons, difficult seasons, joyful seasons and seasons when simply getting through the day is enough.

A home should not make the people inside it feel as though they are failing.

It should be the place where they are allowed to breathe, begin again and know they are loved exactly as they are.
