DIY Lip Balm – Using Nothing But Nature is what it is all about today! Time to switch out those chemical heavy lip balms for something way more natural.
Procuring natural ingredients to make DIY beauty recipes is easier than ever. One of the most common natural beauty swaps that DIY aficionados are making is changing out chemical-laden lip balms with something more natural.
Lip balm can protect your lips from chapping and bleeding, as well as keep them looking supple and beautiful. Here are some DIY lip balm recipes to try, using nothing but nature.
I’m very excited today! My friend Ashley wanted to share some DIY Lip Balms with my readers and I thought it was a great idea! Of course I had to try making one… that way you can all see it in action! So come with me and let’s try one of Ashley’s Lip Balm (I made Creamsicle ). You won’t believe how simple it is to make and feels great on your lips. All of the recipes are incredibly easy. You can make as large of a batch as you would like just by increasing the recipe X2 X3 X4… etc. More about Ashley below!
Creamsicle Lip Balm
For another tasty treat that nourishes your lips naturally, evoke one of your childhood favorite treats by making Creamsicle lip balm.
For this recipe, you will need:
- 1 tsp beeswax pellets
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- 2 tsp shea butter
- 8 drops orange essential oil
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
Using the heating method mentioned previously, melt your beeswax pellets, coconut oil, and shea butter together. When those are blended, add the vanilla extract and mix again. Remove the mixture from the heat as soon as the extract is blended. Add the orange essential oil and transfer to lip balm tubes. Chill until solid.
You will need assorted supplies. For the Creamsicle… all you need is Candelilla Wax… this wax is VEGAN Friendly and was my choice… non Vegans can use Bees Wax Pellets… I want to include everyone. After going Vegan I found it very helpful to know my options so I can make the items also… you will also need Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Orange Essential Oil and Vanilla Essential Oil or Vanilla Extract. I preferred the Vanilla Essential Oil because it seemed to mix better… I tried both and the extract was not as smooth of a blend and I had a few some brown bubbles. It still smells wonderful and works… the oil just looked nicer. You will also need measuring spoons, containers and the funnel is totally optional… spooning delicately works just nicely. The other ingredients included are for the other lip balms. I am a little embarrassed because I forgot to add the Candelilla Wax.
First Step is to add all of your ingredients to your bowl. (DO NOT add the essential oils)
Now… over a low flame and double boiler (made with a glass bowl and pan)… slowly melt all the ingredients till everything is liquid.
Take the pan off the heat and add your essential oils. If you are using Vanilla Extract… add that first while it is over the flame and stir well… then take the pan off the stove and stir in the Orange Essential Oil.
Make sure everything is stirred nicely!
Now it is time to fill the containers!
Once the containers are filled… screw the lid on and allow them to chill until solid… EZ PZ!!!
You will love how it makes your lips feel and with the harsh weather on its way you will use this a lot!
This luscious balm also makes a great little gift… perfect for Stocking Stuffers! I use a small container (I really love the look of them)… but you can use a larger one or you can pour the mixture into lip balm stick containers.
Sure hope you have tons of fun creating these different DIY Lip Balms… I am making the Peppermint Patty next!
Now that you got the hang of making this DIY Lip Balm we have 3 other Recipes for you. Everyone favors certain aromas and ingredients… so it is always great to have a selection. I am going to be making my friends and family a set of Creamsicle and Pepperment Patty blends! Those are my favorites. Don’t you just love that these did not call for all kinds of additives! I love keeping it is natural as possible! Which ones will you be whipping up??? Do tell!
Lavender Butter Balm
Shea butter is commonly used in moisturizers, lotions, and other beauty products due to its silky, rich texture that locks moisture in the skin. Argan oil is a highly sought after ingredient as well, due to its moisturizing properties as well as its health benefits. Not only does argan oil nourish the skin and promote cellular regeneration, but it also has anti-inflammatory properties and vitamins (click to learn more about argan oil).
For this lip balm, you will need:
- 1 tsp argan oil
- 1 tsp shea butter
- 1 tsp beeswax
- 8 drops of lavender essential oil
Put a couple of inches of water in a pot to boil. Place a heat resistant dish into the pot. Add the argan oil, shea butter, and beeswax to the dish. Allow the ingredients to melt together, then add the essential oil and stir. Using a syringe or funnel, transfer the mixture into lip balm tubes and chill until solid.
Peppermint Patty Lip Balm
For a tantalizing treat that will give your lips a slight tint and plumping tingle, try this fantastic Peppermint Patty lip balm.
For this recipe, you will need:
- 1 tsp beeswax pellets
- 1 tsp argan oil
- 1/2 tsp organic cocoa powder
- 5 drops peppermint essential oil
Using the dish-in-pot method mentioned previously, melt your argan oil and beeswax pellets. When it’s melted down, remove from heat and stir in your cocoa powder and essential oil until smooth. Transfer to lip balm tubes and chill until solid. This DIY recipe makes a great gift!
Rosewater Lip Balm
Rosewater has become quite trendy in the natural beauty world in recent years. You can purchase it from specialty shops or make your own with water and rose petals at home.
For this nourishing recipe, you will need:
- 2 tsp beeswax pellets
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp argan oil
- 1 tsp rose water
Using the DIY double boiler method, blend the pellets, coconut oil, and argan oil until melted. Mix in the rose water and stir vigorously. Transfer to lip balm tubes and chill until solid.
Once you get comfortable making these recipes, you can swap ingredients for different essential oils and add natural dyes for custom lip tints. Get creative and make a bespoke lip balm using nothing but nature.

Looks great. Thank you! I would like to caution everyone to be careful of phototoxic essential oils that may harm the lips in the sun.
