Fridge and Freezer Hacks You’ll Love
Keep it Clean:
Spills inevitably happen. Line any flat surface in the refrigerator with press and seal plastic wrap to make for a super simple clean-up process. You can also find thin plastic or silicone sheets that cover the shelves the same way.
Keep Condiments Contained:
An empty egg carton can be used to stand condiment bottles upside down. OR save that cardboard six-pack holder. They usually fit right into the door shelves in the fridge and can keep your bottles all in one spot.
Don’t Let Leftovers go to Waste:
The latest trend is to create an “eat me” box in the fridge. It can be as simple as a basket with a note clipped on it like over at Rocket_Science! Place into it anything that needs to be eaten right away. This way you reduce waste and always have a snack spot to check first when hungry.
Spin it Right Round:
When you have a lot of bottles and jars on a shelf, it can be tricky finding the exact right one. Use a Lazy Susan in one section so you always have easy access to these items. Hometalk says their secret to an organized Fridge is Lazy Susans… drop by and see how they put them to the best uses!
Stick it On:
Over at Tatertots and Jello... Jen shows you how you can utilize small wall space in your fridge by attaching a magnetic strip to the back of little containers. They are perfect for the little bits that you just can’t throw away. It’s brilliant.
One Stop Shop:
Create a “Snack zone” specifically for the kids. This way you can better monitor what they are snacking on and they have easy access to snacks they can get themselves. Hang a couple of magnetic or suction cup baskets on the side wall of the fridge for their designated space. Or get one of those add on drawers that hang under the shelf. These are just great for extra storage as well!
Know the Whats and Wheres:
Are you 100% certain that everything in your fridge has to be refrigerated? If not, you’re using up valuable space! It’s also important to know what to store where. Do you even know the difference between your two produce drawers? Take a few minutes to find out and makes sure everything is in the proper place to make it last the longest. It’s also a good idea for food safety. For instance, never defrost meat on the top shelf. Drips full of bacteria could fall onto other food that you don’t regularly reheat and get you sick.
Organize Your Stacks:
We tend to stack things up in our freezers. Use magazine holders and baskets to organize and easily access everything. Lay magazine holders on their sides in a corner and you have an extra shelf to stack on. Upright magazine holders or baskets can store bags or boxes upright.
Bind them up:
Binder Clips have a couple of great uses in both your fridge and freezer. Clip one tot he spoke of a shelf to store your bottles on their sides in a pyramid formation. Or clip it over the spoke to hang bags in the fridge or freezer.
Ice ‘Em:
Most modern fridges have ice makers but you can still put those old ice trays to good use. Save your fresh herbs frozen in olive oil. Just pop one cube in the pan when you’re ready to use it. You can also freeze individual servings of stock, broth, coffee, egg whites, and so much more.
Basket Case:
Baskets are popular for organizing your fridge or freezer. Be sure to label them clearly or get clear ones to see what is in each one.
Freeze it Flat:
It saves a ton of space to bypass that storage container and use freezer bags. Any soft or liquid is best placed into a baggie, lain flat, and frozen. Then you can stack up various meals or even individual servings. See how great they stack over at The Family Freezer… check out their fabulous Vegetarian Crockpot Freezer Dinners… what a great way to be ready for the busy week ahead.
Magnetic Bottle Holders:
These Magnetic Bottle Holders come in handy when it comes to space saving. This way you have more room on the actual shelf. (The link you use for this is set up to donate to Almost Home Dachshund Rescue through Smile Amazon : ) at no cost to you!
Write Away:
Most fridges and freezers are the perfect writing surface for dry erase markers. Simply get a marker, ad an adhesive magnet and keep it on the fridge. As you run out of something simply write it right on the fridge. OR makeover your fridge completely and paint it in chalkboard paint. Then you have an attractive matte black finish and a ready to write on the surface.
Store ‘Em Stack ‘Em:
Reuse plastic containers to store leftovers or cut fruits and veggies. Use a tall or long one for long veggies like carrots. This way they can be stacked or even stored on the fridge door.
