Beat the gloomy weather blues with these fun family activities at home. Stay entertained all winter long!
Bad weather can sometimes mean an evening full of boredom. As the seasons change, being stuck inside can quickly become monotonous as you wait for warmer weather. Still, as disheartening as bad weather can be, there are plenty of activities that can keep your family occupied and happy all winter long.
Here are just a few great ideas to thrill every member of your household, no matter their age.
1. Throw a Dance Party
Turn on some music! It’s time for your household to get up and dance. Just because you’re stuck inside doesn’t mean you have to sit around being inactive. Dancing is the perfect indoor activity — as long as you ensure nothing breakable can get knocked over. You might want to move some of your furniture out of the way to make an open space.
Dancing can also cut the risk of dementia by over 75%, which is perfect for the youngest child to the oldest adult in your household. Have everyone choose a song they want to hear and dance to. Before long, you’ll have everyone laughing and excited, worn out from the activity as if they’d played a sport outdoors.
2. Bake Some Treats
Foul weather means you need an extra-special treat inside. Find something delicious to bake, and encourage your household to help you out. You can assign age-appropriate tasks to your children, like mixing a brownie mixture or setting the temperature on the oven.
These skills can safely teach them how to operate things in the future with ease. In the end, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor by eating something sweet.
3. Have a Chore Race
Nobody wants to do chores, but they have to get done. During gloomy days, you may be able to incentivize chores as a race with a prize at the end. As long as chores are done well, you may be able to reward people in your household for completing them in a certain timeframe.
The years before your kids go to school are when you, as a parent, have the most influence on their learning. Teaching them basic household skills can pay off well into the future. It also keeps your house clean and frees up time on days you’d rather be outside or doing something else.
4. Play a Card Game
Board games can be needlessly complicated sometimes, which can be challenging if you live with several impatient people or a group of mixed ages. Use the gloomy weather as an opportunity to teach your friends or family something new and fun. Card games are as easy as pulling out one deck and teaching everyone something innovative.
For example, Blackjack can be an easy game to learn to play. You’ll want to explain everything you can to your loved ones, including the terminology. Make sure they know that a “bust” means they’ve exceeded 21 and have lost the round, and show them how to weigh chances in their mind to secure a win. Instead of money, you can bet with pieces of candy. Go Fish might be a great option for kids who aren’t old enough to grasp difficult concepts.
5. Plan the Next Trip
When was the last time you took a family trip? You can dream of days when the weather is nice again by planning your next vacation. Whether you go abroad or just to the next town, an exciting trip to somewhere fun can encourage your family to think about brighter days.
Have everyone research something they want to do in a certain destination, then reconvene and discuss everything together.
6. Rearrange Furniture
Why not get some redecorating done while you can’t go outside? Moving a few pieces of furniture around can keep things interesting, especially as you spend more time indoors in colder weather.
It can also be practical to switch things up this time of year. If your beds or couches are near windows, they might get chilly during the winter.
Don’t Feel Blue During Bad Weather
While sunny days are the best ones to experience, you shouldn’t have to dread lousy weather anymore. Now that you know how to keep your family occupied, it should just be like any other day. Your family can get their energy out in effective ways while also having fun and learning something new.
Eventually, the skies will clear, and you can all get back to your favorite pastimes.
