Come and check out these Innovative Ways to Create Urban Green Spaces, from Gardening to Community Green Spaces and much more. We only have one Earth.
Whether you are a nature person or you are more of a city person, there is something to be said for the existence of green spaces within urban communities. There are so many proven benefits to providing more natural spaces and spending time in nature, and large cities tend to be the places where that lacks the most.
Due mostly to the close quarters that people live in, limited space and limited resources for urban planning that involves green space, people in the cities often go long periods of time without stepping into nature. Although we cannot bring the national parks into our greatest cities, we can certainly do our best with the resources and landscaping tools that we have to create innovative green spaces for those who often miss out on them. Here are a few ways to create even more green spaces in urban environments.
1. Start Community Gardening
Community gardening is one of the first options that comes to mind when planning for more green spaces in urban environments, and for a good reason — not only do community gardens provide much-needed green space in urban landscapes, but they also encourage neighborly interaction, community team building and sustainability. Of course, community gardens look beautiful, but they also provide food to communities. And that is one of the most important parts of gardening.
2. Lean Into the Cultures
While of course, people bring their own individual cultures with them everywhere they go, and that can be a great part of providing green spaces to urban landscapes. However, many cities have their own unique cultures that the residents have built within their own communities, often varying from neighborhood to neighborhood. One of the best ways to plan for a green space within an environment is to explore the culture of any given place in order to best serve the community you’re a part of. You can even find some native plants — which helps with thinking in the long-term about your plans within the green space.
3. Ask Residents and Neighbors What They Want
Speaking of serving your community, another great way to make sure that you are providing creative green spaces that will get used and appreciated Is to collaborate with the residents who currently occupy the area in which you plan to expand. Talk with them, survey them and truly take their needs into consideration. They may even be able to tell you about ideas and innovations that you never knew about before.
4. Fit Things Wherever You Can
Whether you are working within your community or you are simply a resident looking for new and intriguing ideas to contribute, one of the best ways to bring a green space to your city is to think as creatively as possible about fitting spaces wherever they can go. This will vary a lot from city to city, as each one has its own unique features, but it can be one of the most critical steps in planning a green space.
Fitting Green Spaces Into Your Community
No matter where you come from, getting outside and experiencing nature is important. That’s why working to create green spaces in urban environments is about so much more than planting a few plants or participating in landscape design. It’s a part of the community, and you have an opportunity to contribute.
