Morning everyone! It’s Friday and here on the Northern East Coast we are expecting company and her name is Irene! I sure hope she decides to take a trip out to Sea and does not knock on our door! In case you are saying what is she talking about…Irene is a hurricane moving her way up the East Coast! Hope everyone stays safe.
So I don’t think we will be going out much this weekend so why not have something yummy and sweet!
I bring you Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits! Even though I am a Jersey Girl, I have to tell you this recipe is yummy. Perfect for a special treat on Sunday for the kids and hubby! Give it a try…I think you will like it. I am also including the Italian Jersey version I came up with…let me tell you that one is awesome. Hope you have fun with this recipe and ENJOY!!!!
I did my homework and I looked to the Queen…Paula Deen for inspiration. I took her recipe as a jumping point and added to it an I think I came up with a yummy chocolate gravy that a Southern Lady would be proud of. Hope you enjoy, I would love to hear what you thought of the recipe.
Recipe for Chocolate Gravy
Ingredients:
1/2 stick of butter
2/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons of all purpose flour
1/3 cup of good rich cocoa
2 cups whole milk
1/3 cup of heavy cream
2 ounces of good milk chocolate or semi sweet chocolate
First things first, take all of your dry ingredients and mix them together then give them a good sift. I can not stress this enough, you truly need to sift these ingredients for a totally creamy consistency. Now set them aside and Heat up your butter in a cast iron skillet or a medium sauce pan over a low heat. It is now time to whisk in your dry ingredients until everything is blended, now slowly pour your first cup of milk into the pan whisking constantly, blending well and creating a smooth consistency. Whisk in the remaining milk and continue stirring until you have a nice thick gravy. Now take your chocolate and add to your gravy, on the low heat melt the chocolate into the gravy and then add your heavy cream and stir well to finish the gravy. It is now time to serve.
Take out your favorite biscuits from the oven and you are ready to go! A bit of whipped cream is a great idea. I made my whipped cream with a tablespoon of vanilla sugar added to it and it was yummy. There are so many desserts you can create with this gravy it is unbelievable. For a really simple one, make some whipped cream, take some pound cake and cut it into cubes and place on a buttered baking pan, pop into the oven at 400 and lightly toast. Place a dollop of gravy at the bottom of a glass, then a dollop of whipped cream, sprinkle a layer of toasted pound cake, then a layer of slightly warmed strawberry preserves, and then repeat, top with whipped cream and a fresh strawberry and some chocolate shavings…simple, delicious and fun! So many variations, just use your imagination and what you have in the house and you are sure to make a hit at dessert time.
Reheating
If by some chance you have some gravy left, no problem! Pop it in the fridge till next time. Place in your saucepan and reheat slowly and at a very low heat whisking in some additional milk and it is ready. You can also eat it chilled as pudding. ENJOY!
Now we are going to do it Jersey Style!
This is an example how fusion works in the sweet world just like the savory world! This is an example of South Meets North! So here is the Italian Jersey version, tell me what you think when you try it. Here is the recipe for Chocolate Nutella Gravy with Zeppoles!

We are serving this Gravy with Zeppoles…here is a good recipe you should check out
Zepploes Now if you do not feel like making your own from scratch, get a pound of your favorite pizza dough and break into small piece (make sure to stretch it a bit) and deep fry, sprinkle confectioners sugar on them, a little whipped cream on the side on them and dip!
