Simple daily habits that help you keep up at home without burnout… gentle routines that make life feel easier
Hi there friends… let me ask you something. Do you ever feel like you are doing your best… and still somehow you are still falling behind? The dishes get done but the counter is messy again. You straighten one room and another one needs even more attention. And before you know it, that tired feeling settles in… the kind that makes you think, what’s the point… I’ll just deal with it tomorrow. (Please don’t fall into that trap… the tomorrow trap is deep and wide and I have fallen far at times!!!)
If that sounds familiar, please know you are not alone. Keeping up with life, home, family, work, and everything in between is a full time job all by itself and then some! The truth is… most of us don’t need more to do. We need gentler ways to do what we are already doing.
So today I wanted to share a few simple habits that really do help you keep up… without burning out. No pressure. No perfection. Just small changes that make everyday life feel a little easier. I know some of them are really simple and some of them might be a tad repetitive but they work. There is a lot of living to do and I want you to be able to enjoy it and be present during all the moments. Not always worrying if the house is glowing! I want you to enjoy your child’s baseball game or school recital or simply reading a book , chatting over a cup of coffee and the list goes on! You deserve it. Another note of honesty… I use to ignore a post like this one (really) saying none of this will make a difference but I actually tried some ideas and found out that they did. Something does not have to be really difficult to make a difference… all the little things add up! Give them a try or at least a few!
1. Do a Little Before You Sit Down
This one changed everything for me. Before you settle into the couch or your favorite chair at night… take just two minutes to put a few things back where they belong. Clear the coffee table. Get rid of unwanted mail and put the rest of today’s mail in a designated place. Maybe fold up a few throws that are not being used and put them in a basket. It doesn’t have to be perfect… just better than it was. You will thank yourself in the morning.
2. Create One Easy Morning Win
Start your day with one tiny habit that makes everything feel smoother. Maybe it’s making your bed. Maybe it’s wiping the kitchen counter after breakfast. Maybe it’s opening the curtains to let the light in. One small win first thing in the morning sets the tone for the whole day. I truly love to make a special cup of brew and pour it into a favorite mug, could be coffee or a yummy tea creation… it puts me in a good mood. Slipping a special little piece of chocolate into everyone’s lunch is something I use to do when the kids were small and I think I made me feel as good as it did them when they found it! Small wins my friends means so much.
3. Stop Saving Everything for the Weekend
We have all done it… I’ll deal with that Saturday. But Saturday comes and suddenly you’re tired before you even start. Try spreading things out instead. This one move can make all the difference! One load of laundry today… one quick drawer reset tomorrow. Vacuum the living room. Wipe down the bathroom. Have the kids straighten out their closet. Little by little feels so much better than everything all at once.
4. Use the Five Minute Rule
If something takes five minutes or less… do it now. Hang the coat. Empty the dishwasher. Wipe the sink. Make lunch for the next morning. Maybe put together a yummy over night oat creation for a quick, easy and healthy breakfast. If you put them in smaller jars the kids can even eat it on the way to school I you are running late. Make sure the kids have their backpacks packed with homework in toe! Maybe straighten out a shelf… you will be surprised what you can get done in a concentrated 5 minutes! It saves you from a big exhausting clean later. And it feels so good to just get it done.
5. Give Everything a Simple Home
When things don’t have a place, they end up everywhere. This is one that I know oh so well. Things do wind up anywhere and you don’t know where. By simply putting things back will save your hours each week. Choose one spot for keys… one spot for mail… one spot for backpacks … spices… even cleaners and the list goes on! When everything has a home, tidying becomes easier and faster. Less thinking… less searching… less stress.
6. Lower the Bar on Busy Days
Not every day needs to be productive. Some days the goal is simply to get through and that is more than enough. Give yourself permission to do less on the hard days. You are not lazy… you are human. Another way of saying it is… give yourself some Grace!
7. End the Day with a Gentle Reset
Before bed, take just five minutes to reset one small area. The kitchen counter… the coffee table… the bathroom sink. ..grind the coffee and get it ready to brew as soon as your feet hit the floor… straighten that top shelf of the fridge so you don’t have to move everything around in the mornin and so on and so on… Waking up to even one tidy spot can change how your whole morning feels.
At the end of the day, keeping up isn’t about doing more… it’s about doing things in a way that doesn’t wear you down. Gentle habits add up. Tiny routines make a difference. And you don’t have to do everything to feel like you’re doing enough.
I hope these simple habits help you feel a little lighter… a little calmer… and a little more supported in your everyday life. And remember… you are doing better than you think.
Thank you for being here, my sweet friends… I appreciate you more than you know. – andrea @ the cottage market
