How about some upcycling fun? For those of you that are regulars here…you know my husband…aka Junkin Joe! Well he came home from Good Will with a carpenters box…beat up…ultra dirty…and it was tossed into the free pile. Joe just couldn’t leave it there (he kept thinking of the person behind the box and it made him a bit sad) so he brought it home to use in the garage for some odds and ends because. I took a look at it and thought that it might have a bit of potential…even though it was a long stretch! So Joe said have at it!
That’s how my little Thrifty Herb Garden was born.
This is how our tired little friend look when he came home…
Rough around the edges is an understatement.
A really good sanding was in order…use sanding blocks…I really didn’t want to use and electric sander…my fear was that there would be chipping.
Then it was time for a little bath…2 rolls of paper towels worth!
About 4 coats of black and 4 coats of blue…the box was coated with a new look!
Still showing much wear and tear the project went on.
Lined it with plastic…trimmed it and then drilled drainage holes.
Put the first layer of dirt in…
Yes…3 eggs..whole ones…I have been reading that they are a wonderful natural fertilizer…they are placed about 10 inches down into the soil and they will slowly rot allowing key nutrients to be released and naturally fertilize the herbs (I will let you know what happens : )
Now I don’t want to bore you …so here is the planter after the herbs have been planted…if you notice…we elevated the box with little blocks of wood so drainage can flow freely. The big lid is on 2 legs that we added so there is extra room for odds and ends…maybe we will add a few potted herbs up there soon.
For a little extra space, we placed added legs to the flipped lid which gave us extra room for odds and ends…maybe we will add a few potted herbs up there soon.
Having the shelf is a real plus!
I made some chalkboard tags and just embellished them a little with some hand painted leaves…by the way…they covered up a multitude of dings!
I made a tag for each herb and a little framed chalkboard saying
Herb Garden…
Added a few little items from the adventures of Junkin Joe like this little gnome and the rooster pitcher that makes a perfect watering can.
Little frogs jumped in to have some fun…they are little salt and pepper shakers from Good Will.
Everybody seems to like their new home!
Oh and meet one of Junkin Joe’s newest finds…the Frog Prince!
He will be supervising his herbal domain.
One thing is for sure…no one will be lonely in this little garden.
We hope all the happiness makes the herbs grow and grow!
You want to know one of the best things about this…it cost $18
and that is for the herbs and soil…everything else we had…and ultra thrifty upcycled project
Now does this mean that Junkin Joe will be bringing home more castaways????
See you all tomorrow for the
Junkin Joe
Features and LINKY Party
ALL are welcome
We hope to see you there!

Every garden needs a cute little gnome – I have a few myself!
I know how you hate the sun – do you clip your herbs at night?!!

Great upcycle! ♥
Not only beautiful, but useful. Amazing what a couple rolls of paper towels can bring about…okay, maybe a bit more than paper towels. But I had to crack up because I too always use gobs of paper towels!

Tip about saving a few paper towels: save your old sanding sponges and use them to wash a piece – they scrub the dirt right off. I want JJ to come here and find me a carpenter’s box and make this herb garden for me. I love this idea – so much I will be looking for a box for herbs myself.
I have an old Leather covered trunk and wanted to do this with it only my husband stole it and filled it with his stuff in his den (he is into Astro Photography) So I will either have to find an old one and do it before he steals that one too or I will have to build something like it. I have a green house that’s empty at the moment I want to grow herbs and veggies with a small seating area for just enjoying the quite times’ You have wonderful up cycling ideas I will have to send pictures when I get it done
