Tomatoes
I give my cats dry cat food, and was surprised to learn that the brand I feed contains tomatoes. Aren’t tomatoes poisonous to pets?
Hi there Wendy…how are you : ) I check everything through the ASPCA before I include it in my treats : ) I have Posts dedicated to the safety of pets because I find the topic very serious and very very important…I need you to know that : ) I appreciate your concern…but it is one of those bits of info that has been misconstrued…the actual tomato fruit is NOT toxic to dogs…if you would like more information…I can send it to you…gut I think this one piece from the ASPCA Website will help clear it all up : )
In this case the answer is no, Tricia. The green parts of the tomato plant are considered toxic because they contain solanine, which has the potential to produce significant gastrointestinal and central nervous system effects. However ripe tomatoes, the part of the plant typically used in food products, are not toxic. Therefore, we would not expect any poisoning-related issues with the tomato content of your pet food.
And here is the statement from Poison Control Helpline : )
The ripened fruit of this plant (the commonly eaten tomato) is considered non-toxic but the green parts of the plant contain solanine, a glycoalkoloid. Solanine is also found in many other plants from the Solanaceae family, including the potato plant (green parts only). Typically, when ingested by dogs and cats, it rarely results in toxicity. A large amount needs to be ingested (e.g., chronically in cattle) for solanine to result in severe poisoning. Ingestion can cause severe gastrointestinal distress (e.g., vomiting, diarrhea), lethargy, weakness, and even confusion.
As with any other ingredient…we always should use it in moderation and of course the recipe does just that : ) So there is no fear with Pop’s Pizza Treats : )
Hugs and thank you for CARING…the world needs more loving people like you! Have a wonderful day and give your pup a HUG from me and mine!
