Creative fall and Halloween thrift store makeovers filled with pumpkins, ghosts, vintage charm and budget friendly ideas.
There is nothing quite like walking into a Thrift Store with absolutely no idea what you are looking for…and walking out with something that suddenly has a whole new purpose! That is half the fun, right?
Today we are celebrating two of my favorite things… Fall and fabulous thrift store makeovers! We have colorful pumpkins, cozy textures, warm amber glass, baskets, vintage finds and plenty of those wonderful projects that make you say, “Wait…THAT is what they started with?”
Then, as we make our way through the collection, things get just a little bit spooky! Halloween is still a ways off, but this is the perfect time to start gathering those secondhand treasures before everyone else realizes what they could become.
So grab a cup of something yummy, get comfortable and prepare to add a few things to your next thrift store shopping list. There is a ton of inspiration waiting for you!

Cozy Fall Thrift Store Makeovers

Alcohol Ink Paint on Glass Pumpkins
These clear thrifted glass pumpkins received the most gorgeous colorful makeover with alcohol inks. I love how the translucent colors play with the glass…it is such a pretty way to bring rich Fall color into your home without going the usual route.

The Easiest Thrift Store Wreath Makeover for Fall
Never walk past a tired old wreath too quickly! Cindy dismantled an $8 thrift store find, refreshed the moss, repainted the little pumpkins and added softer greenery to give the whole thing a completely new life. Now this is what we call a makeover!

Thrift Store Fall Decor
Becky proves that sometimes you don't need a huge makeover to create something beautiful. A thrifted ceramic piece becomes an autumn cornucopia filled with thrifted florals and foraged finds, while an ordinary metal stand gets a little antique gold magic. I just love those warm Fall colors!

Decorating for Fall with Amber Glass Bottles
Clear little thrift store bottles become warm amber beauties with paint, metallic touches and leaf details. Group them with real amber glass and suddenly you have one of those gorgeous little collections that looks as though it took years to gather.

Modern Fall Decor for the Fireplace
A thrifted folding candelabra and brass candlesticks become a fabulous Fall fireplace display topped with colorful heirloom style pumpkins. I especially love this one because it feels seasonal without looking overly crafty…and those gorgeous pumpkin colors certainly don't hurt!

Blue Fall Decor with a Pumpkin Throw Pillow
Fall doesn't have to be orange, orange and more orange! A thrifted blue pillow and a beautiful flannel shirt come together to make this wonderfully unexpected pumpkin pillow. The mix of blue, gold and warm autumn shades is such a breath of fresh Fall air.

Painted Wood Pumpkins for Rustic Fall Decor
You know I adore a project where someone sees something completely different hiding inside an ordinary thrift store find. These scratched monkey pod wood pieces certainly weren't pumpkins when they started…but a little paint, wax, burlap and twine took care of that!

How to Napkin Decoupage Dollar Tree Pumpkins For Fall
Old inexpensive pumpkins can get yet another life with pretty paper napkins and Mod Podge. Rachel shares some really helpful tips about choosing the right pattern size too, which can make all the difference when working on smaller pumpkins. The finished collection is so cheerful and colorful!
Clever Thrifted Pumpkin Makeovers
Now we have officially entered pumpkin territory…but I promise we are not going to turn absolutely everything in the thrift store into one! Well…maybe almost everything. Lol!

DIY Sweater Pumpkins
Those cozy thrift store sweaters are hiding a pumpkin patch inside them! Christy shows how the sleeves can become adorable no sew pumpkins, and you can make several from a single sweater. Look for beautiful knits, stripes and unexpected colors while you are thrifting.

Liquor Bottle Painting for Fall Pumpkin Decor
The shapes of these glass bottles were just begging to become pumpkins and gourds. Layered Fall paint colors create those natural looking variations you see on real pumpkins, while jute and leaves finish everything off. What a fun save from the recycling bin!

Repurposed Tennis Racket Pumpkin
This one is just plain FUN! An inexpensive old wooden tennis racket gets shortened, painted bright orange and transformed into whimsical pumpkin decor with ribbon, a leaf and a clever little stem. I don't think I will ever look at the sporting goods section the same way again.

Pottery Barn Inspired Faux Concrete Jack-O'-Lanterns
Now this is a thrift store transformation! Katie updated inexpensive secondhand jack-o'-lanterns with textured black paint and aged details to create the look of much pricier Halloween decor. Her thrifted versions came in at under $6 for the pair…YES PLEASE!
Halloween Thrift Store Makeovers
And just like that…things are getting SPOOKY!
Not terribly spooky though. You know us. We like our ghosts friendly, our haunted houses charming and our Halloween projects with a good dose of thrift store magic.

Upcycling a Straw Tote as a Halloween Planter
Only a true upcycler could look at an orange and black straw tote and immediately see a jack-o-lantern planter. Add a simple felt face and a beautiful pot of mums and suddenly that forgotten thrift store bag is ready for the porch. Or should we call it a Jack-O-Planter?

Haunted House Decor from a House Shaped Picture Frame
This one has my heart! An ordinary thrifted house shaped picture frame becomes the sweetest vintage inspired haunted house. It has just enough Halloween charm without being overly spooky…exactly the kind of piece you would be excited to pull out year after year.

Halloween Decor: Easy Vintage Inspired Specimen Art
Old display frames, vintage book pages and creepy little critters become wonderfully eerie specimen art. These would look fabulous tucked into a Halloween vignette with old bottles, candles and a few other mysterious thrifted treasures.

How to Make a Floating Ghost with a Metal Candlestick
How adorable are these little ghosts! Thrifted metal candlesticks are hiding underneath the fabric, giving each ghost enough height to look as though it is floating right above the tabletop. Spooky…but in the cutest possible way.

Have an Old Basket? Make Fun Fall Decor in Just an Hour
A worn old basket gets painted a soft pumpkin shade, wrapped with jute and given a sweet jack-o-lantern face before being filled with Fall mums. Easy, inexpensive and another reminder that the basket aisle should NEVER be skipped!

Modern Halloween Decor from a Plastic Pumpkin Bucket
Those inexpensive plastic pumpkin buckets seem to multiply in thrift stores every Fall…so why not rescue one? Copper metallic paint takes this little guy from trick or treat bucket to surprisingly chic Halloween planter. Such a simple transformation with a BIG difference!

How to Turn Framed Art Into Haunted Décor for Halloween
Here is a reason to look twice at those old landscapes and forgotten framed prints. Add ghosts, pumpkins and a few spooky touches and that peaceful little thrift store scene suddenly has a Halloween story to tell. I have a feeling I am going to be checking the art section VERY carefully now!
How to Make a Spooky Mirror with Thrifted Finds
This one might make you jump if you forget it is there! A thrifted mirror gets an aged black and silver finish, then part of the backing is carefully removed so a ghostly black and white photograph can peek through from behind the glass. Now THAT is a Halloween makeover.
How to Make Ghost Party Art from a Thrifted Sign
An old thrifted sign becomes a whole gathering of textured little ghosts with paint and dimensional frosting or spackling. It is cute, slightly spooky and completely customizable…there is even a blue eyed ghost hiding in the crowd. How could we resist this one?
Fall and Halloween Thrifting Tips to Keep in Mind
Check the Glassware Aisle
Glass pumpkins, bottles, vases and jars can become some of the prettiest Fall pieces with paint, alcohol ink or a little metallic finish. Look at the shape first…not the color it happens to be today.
Never Skip Baskets and Wreaths
A tired wreath or worn basket may only need cleaning, paint, new greenery or a clever new purpose. These are some of the easiest secondhand pieces to refresh for Fall and Halloween.
Thrift the Textile Section Too
Sweaters, flannel shirts and pillows can hide wonderful seasonal projects. Look for colors and textures you love even when the item itself is not something you would ever wear or use as is.
Frames and Old Art Are Halloween Gold
House shaped frames, old landscapes, mirrors and shadow boxes are fabulous starting points for haunted houses, ghost art, specimen displays and other spooky projects.
Candlesticks and Brass Pieces Are Workhorses
Metal candlesticks, candelabras and little brass pieces can add height, structure and instant vintage character to seasonal displays…and sometimes they become the actual bones of the project.
Inspect Before It Goes in the Cart
Check for cracks, water damage, odors, loose joints and missing pieces that would be difficult to replace. A bargain is only a bargain when the makeover still makes sense after supplies and repairs.
One Thrift Store Trip Away…
See what I mean about thrift stores? Somewhere between the stacks of old frames, mystery baskets, lonely candlesticks and things that make you wonder who bought them the FIRST time…there are some fabulous Fall and Halloween decorations just waiting to happen.
I especially love that so many of these projects aren't about buying loads of new supplies. They are about looking at something overlooked with a little imagination and asking…
What could you become?
So the next time you are thrifting, take an extra lap through the aisles. Check the frames. Check the baskets. Check the old glassware. And yes…apparently we need to check the tennis rackets too! Lol!
I hope you found a few projects here that inspire your own Fall or Halloween treasure hunt.
Happy Thrifting and Happy Creating!
