Hi there my friends… Back to school season is one of those moments that always feels exciting, emotional and just a little bit busy. New backpacks, fresh pencils, sharpened crayons, lunch boxes by the door and of course… those sweet first day of school photos.
Today I’m sharing Free Printable Back to School Chalkboard Signs Pre-K to 12th Grade & Last Day Signs too so you can capture both the beginning and the end of the school year in one easy printable set.
This collection includes back to school chalkboard signs for each grade from Pre-K through 12th Grade, plus matching Last Day of School signs too. They are perfect for first day photos, last day snapshots, homeschool memories, classroom fun, scrapbooks and keepsake albums.
We have been sharing these signs for almost 8 years now, and I just want to say how truly thankful we are for every family, teacher and homeschooler who has used them. Some of you have been printing these signs for almost a decade, and it is honestly such an honor to be a tiny part of your back to school tradition.
Just print the grade you need… snap a picture on the first day… then do it again on the last day to see just how much your child has grown and changed over the year.
Such a simple little tradition… but one you will be so happy to have later.

Tips For Printing Your School Signs
- Use cardstock when you can. Regular printer paper works just fine, but white cardstock will make the signs feel sturdier for photos and keepsakes.
- Choose the best quality setting. Set your printer to high quality or best quality so the chalkboard details and lettering print nice and crisp.
- Print the PDF for the easiest option. The PDF is usually the best choice if you want the sign to print at the correct size without extra adjusting.
- Use the JPG if you want more flexibility. The JPG option is great if you want to resize the sign, add it to a photo project or print it through a photo service.
- Check your printer preview. Before you print, make sure the whole sign is showing on the page and choose “fit to page” if needed.
- Save the matching last day sign now. Download the last day version at the same time so it is ready when the school year ends.
Tips For Using Your First Day And Last Day Signs
- Take the photo in the same spot. Using the same porch, doorway, wall or backyard spot on the first and last day makes the comparison extra sweet.
- Keep the sign simple in the photo. Let your child hold it, place it on a small easel or clip it to a clipboard so it is easy to see.
- Try natural light. Morning light by a window, on the porch or outside in open shade usually gives you the prettiest photo.
- Add a little personality. Include their backpack, lunchbox, favorite shoes, a book or something that shows who they are that year.
- Print one for a scrapbook. Tuck the sign into a school memory binder with the photo, handwriting samples, artwork and little notes from the year.
- Use them for classrooms too. Teachers can print the signs for bulletin boards, classroom photos, open house displays or sweet end of year memories.
So…Fire up those printers and I highly recommend if you are going to print from home to use a high quality card stock…it’s the best quality!
Remember…you can resize these for any purpose you have in mind. I always have to share that your local office supply store can print amazing lazer copies for you on card stock for under $1!!! Hope you ENJOY!

I love these signs and have been using them for the past 3 years! This year my daughter doesn’t meet the cutoff for our school district’s kindergarten, so she will be in a Kindergarten Readiness program (a little different than Pre K which she was in last year as them combine with 1/2 day kindergartners in the afternoon). Would you please be able to make a “K Readiness” sign?

Thank you for the First Day signs! 🙂 I love them. I printed my signs for FIRST Day and Last Day so I have matching ones for the photos. Can you upload the “Last Day of THIRD Grade sign”? I printed it but realize it was a repeat of the first day 3rd grade sign. I just want to be ready in May 2021 with the matching sign!

All you need to do is look for the color type under each grade… for example… under kindergaren it says kindergarent… click on that and the image will appear… when it does “Save As” and print 🙂 If you have any problem at all… let know which grades you would like and I will send you the download! We are hoping you can add the higher school grades ninth to twelfth as well as Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior pretty please.
