You deserve some “me” time. Maybe you’re a stay-at-home mom who does everything for her family. Maybe you are an entrepreneur who is juggling family and your business. Perhaps, you work outside the home trying to maintain that elusive work-family balance. No matter what your role, chances are, you don’t always put yourself first. It may seem like there’s rarely any time during the day for your own interests and relaxation, but it’s important to have time that is just yours. Now is the time to take back your free time and try these easy hacks to take time for you.
Take Back Your Free Time: Easy Hacks to Take Time For You!
Own your morning.
In my younger years, I enjoyed sleeping in a little. However, those hours before the rest of the household arises are the perfect me moments. Setting your alarm clock an hour or two before the rest of the family gets up for the day will allow you to drink a hot cup of coffee without being interrupted, get dressed in peace and in my situation, I get some valued blogging done. Keeping a consistent morning routine will help you feel empowered from the moment you wake up.
Find your passion.
Make a list of all the things you loved to do before you were defined by your role as wife, mother, employee, or boss. What do you love to do? You may be just as passionate about the parent, spouse, or worker identity that you hold, but think about what fuels your fire separately from these labels. Do you love to write? Sew? Build things? Take photographs? Find your inner Picasso? Design birdhouses? Dance? Maybe you’ve considered pursuing a new hobby. Do it! Take an hour or so each week and dive into something you enjoy. Take pictures, write about, or document your passion on social media. Your family will be inspired by your interests, and you’ll have something of your own.
Exercise and energize.
Many women have a love-hate relationship with the gym. For busy career women and/or moms, leaving home to work out can be challenging. Remember however, that keeping yourself physically fit is a win-win for yourself and your family. By taking the time to exercise, you’ll have more energy to channel into the other areas in your life. Don’t get into a boring workout rut. Try an exercise class (many are part of gym memberships). Zumba, aqua fitness classes, or kickboxing are some ways to get grooving and moving without feeling like you’re back in the same old exercise routine you’ve done for years. Watch some videos and get moving at home! Incentivize your workouts by tracking the days you hit the gym or workout at home. Give yourself little rewards for reaching your workout goals like new workout clothes, a sweet (but healthy) treat, or a motivating book. Don’t make your exercise agenda about a number on the scale; make it about time for you to get healthy and moving!
Call an old friend.
Social media makes it so easy to connect with lifelong friends. However, sometimes hearing a person’s voice makes all the difference to lift your spirit. Call someone who has brought joy to your life and take 30 minutes to an hour to catch up. Reminiscence about some favorite memories then share your current joys and sorrows. Even if things are tough in your life right now, talking with a cherished loved one can be an instant mood lifter, and it’s a way for you to take back your time as a friend. Friends close by or coming in town? Take some time for a girls’ night to celebrate your friendship.
You may be a wife, mother, and worker in and/or outside your home, but you are also an independent woman filled with a creative spirit and interests beyond family. That’s OK! Take back your free time! Living your own life with these easy hacks to take time for you will make all the difference in your happiness on your own and with the ones you love.
