Ways to Make Your Home Feel Like You
You don’t need large constructions and major renovations to help you make your house feel more like you and your family. Small and budget-friendly changes can really alter the mood of your space. So let’s take a look at a few ideas that will add personality to your living area; maybe one will be perfect for you.
1. Paint Your Walls
With a plethora of paints out there, you are sure to find the color, shade, texture, and finish you would love to be surrounded by! It is something you can do for every room and get the whole family involved. (Kids LOVE picking out the color of their room.) You don’t have to stop at the walls though; how about adding a feature wall, maybe a mural? Don’t forget the ceiling. The top of the room no longer has to be plain white! You can go with coordinating shades or something bold—whatever your heart desires. Have a reason to look up!
Another space that paint changes everything is in the kitchen. Painting or staining the cabinets can totally alter this beloved space! You can transform the kitchen into a Farmhouse Style with farmhouse shades or a modern space with bolder colors, or you might want to go with two-tone cabinets which are forever in style. The possibilities are truly endless. While you are at it, you might want to add a new backsplash too!
Did you know that there is even a paint that covers bathroom tiles? Well, there is, and that gives you the power to mix things up in the bathroom without having to remove any tile at all! With a new shade of tile, a wall color you love, and a few accessories… VOILA!
2. Display Art
I can’t think of any other way to express yourself more than the artwork you hang. Creating a Wall Gallery or Mini Wall Galleries throughout the home will add so much love, personality, and give you the feeling that you are truly home. What better way to display pieces of artwork you have collected through the years or items you recently purchased that you adore. There is no right or wrong; this is a space that you do you! Find the arrangement you fall in love with and hang. A Wall Gallery is a great place to display photography along with other items with memories. How about a family vacation Gallery, travels around the world, travels in your home state, and everything that is close to your heart? Let’s not forget a Pet Wall Gallery, paintings, drawings, photos, and more! One of my favorite Wall Galleries is the KID Creation wall where you can display all of the little one’s mini Masterpieces and change them up just like a museum when more artwork comes along! MIX… Match… ENJOY!
Featuring art above the sofa with one large piece or maybe a pair. How about leaning a collection of art on the mantel? Don’t forget about the hallways! I am also a big believer in letting the kids choose what goes on their walls (within reason, of course) and also adding a Bulletin Board to their space so they can put all the little pieces that are so important to them on display. Art is truly an amazing way to express yourself, so enjoy and enjoy collecting your favorite pieces too! If you have a favorite piece of art that happens to be hanging in a museum, remember that there are incredible prints out there and replicas that would look picture-perfect on the wall! I think it would be really cool for each member of the family to pick out their favorite famous art paintings, drawings, and such, frame them, and make a Museum Wall. Well, you get the picture!!!
3. Statement Furniture
In the wonderful world of DIY, Upcycle, and more, it can be very budget-friendly to add a statement piece of furniture that you adore and that you created yourself! A simple visit to the thrift store or flea market just might lead you to the piece of your dreams. Then you bring it home, check out some bloggers with tons of information and examples of furniture makeovers and plan your chart, of course. You will be amazed at what YOU can create!
4. Feature a Collection
So many of us collect things, and many times we are not sure how to display them, right? Well, do some browsing through tons of blogs and you will get a lot of inspiration. Then tackle displaying your collection; anything from hats to salt and pepper shakers to cameras to pottery to teapots and on and on and on. Having these favorite items around will make YOU feel happy, and the same goes for other family members who are passionate about certain things! I personally collect HOT Sauce; so many different bottles, cool labels, tons of fun but not as much when they are in the pantry… so, we are going to try building something like a large spice rack so all different sizes and shapes can fit. That way I will be able to see them all each day and it will make my Kitchen Space waaaaay more me… what do you want to display!!!
5. Don’t Rush To Buy
Are you like me? Once I get something in my head, I want to do it and get it done? Well, that is not always the best approach when purchasing things for your home. Take, for instance, a sofa; you see one you like, but you don’t love it. You continue looking, and that first one is the one you like the best. Don’t buy it yet; you have been living with whatever sofa you have for a long time… a little bit more time is not going to hurt. Continue your search for the perfect sofa, and when you find it, snatch it up! That goes for lamps, vases, accessories, appliances… EVERYTHING… Surround yourself with items you love.
6. Plants
If you happen to LOVE plants, the world is filled with all different kinds; there is a plethora of them out there, and I am sure many have your name on them. Mix the sizes up, the unique pots, plant stands, and you will add a ton of personality to any space in the home. If you are not green-thumbed but still love those green-leaved beauties, there are also a plethora of faux plants that are so real-looking you might just water them by mistake. You might be an African Violet person; they are so amazing to add to the Cottagecore look and more! Just remember to check out your plants if you have pets. There are many that are not safe, so don’t take any chances with a sick fur baby. Do the research before you buy. Here’s a list of some Pet-Friendly Houseplants for you. (insert this link).
7. Signature Scent
I have to be honest… I am allergic to all flowers and their scents, but I still like things to smell fresh… so I use Peppermint Essential oil… it’s a scent that is naturally refreshing, and the bathroom is a wonderful place to use it, as is any other room. For the rest of the house, I light an apple cinnamon candle that makes the house feel warm and cozy! You just feel more relaxed and at home. This might not be for you, but many people adore it. You can also do it from time to time by warming up a potpourri pot on the stove… this is my favorite. Here are even a few more ideas on how to get the house smelling great.
8. Accessories
From drapes to bedspreads to tablecloths to napkins to rugs and beyond, choose all of these carefully and ask yourself: DO YOU LOVE THIS?
There are so many ways to make your home feel like you and your family! Explore some of these, and PLEASE share some of your ideas with us. I will add them to the list!!!
9. Add Wallpaper
The WONDERFUL world of Wallpaper will open doors you never even dreamed of! Once you find a pattern that you love… from animal prints to granny chic flowers… have at it! Maybe cover a ceiling… panels to a hutch… create a feature wall and the list goes on!!! Your personality will SHINE through!!! You can see some awesome Wallpaper Samples right here
PLEASE remember one thing when decorating a home: sometimes you feel as though you have to follow certain rules… I mean, this designer shows you this, Joanna Gaines sets her bar, HGTV has a million and one steps. They are all helpful, but use them as a suggestion… take the ones you love, and then YOU BE YOU. Have the confidence to add color where you want it… take the risk of adding something not so conventional, but you just adore it. HAVE FUN… the home is a place of love, family, and friends… so make you and them a part of it! ENJOY, Friends… Hugs!
Want to stay in the know? I’d really love that! (((HUGS))) |
